Abstrak

This research was conducted because of the difficulties of fifth grade students at State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan in writing number symbols. The purpose of this study was to determine the abilities, difficulties, and factors that cause students' difficulties in writing number symbols in fifth grade students at State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative.

This research was conducted in class V of State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan on 21-23 February 2022. The data collection tool used in this study was an assignment test in the form of essay questions and interviews. The test is used to determine the abilities and difficulties of students, while interviews are used to determine the factors that cause student difficulties. The population in this study were all fifth grade students of State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan and also as a sample in the study.Based on the data analysis, it was concluded that (1) the ability to write number symbols in fifth grade students of State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan obtained an average of 62.08 and was included in the criteria for underprivileged. (2) based on the test questions given the difficulties experienced by the fifth grade students of State Elementary School 068006 Medan Tuntungan in writing number symbols, namely students found it difficult to write number symbols which were dictated correctly according to the rules in Enhanced Spelling. (3) the factors causing student difficulties are the lack of interest or motivation in learning Indonesian language and because students have forgotten about the symbols for numbers and how to write them.
